Last fall, as part of my coach-training program, I asked many loved ones in my life to tell me how I show up in the world. I collected all the feedback and worked with my coach to distill the essence of me, as represented by five powerful words. One of those words is magnetism.
Webster’s dictionary defines magnetism first in a scientific way and second as “an ability to attract or charm.”
I resisted owning this part of me at first, but I’ve come to embrace it- fully and completely. And I know it to be true. Ask my parents, my husband, my friends… people have always talked to me and shared their lives with me.
Here’s a funny story about my magnetism.
When I was in my second year of law school, I was dating Ross and regularly visiting him in Mt. Laurel on weekends. I would take the bus from Port Authority in Manhattan, and he’d pick me up at the bus station off of Route 73. On one such occasion, I emerged from the bus, and though I saw Ross out of the corner of my eye, I finished my conversation with Bob, gave him a hug, wished him well and said goodbye.
I then approached Ross, and our conversation went something like this after we hugged hello:
R: Who was that?
J: Oh- that’s Bob.
R: Who’s Bob?
J: He’s Bob.
R: How do you know him?
J: I don’t really. We just met.
R: What do you mean?
J: I mean we just met. We’ve been talking for the last 45 minutes. He isn’t very happy in his job and thinks he wants to switch fields altogether. But he is a newlywed, and his wife is pregnant with their first child. He is thinking he wants a son but really is just praying for a healthy baby. I’m so excited for him.
R: (speechless)
And yet he married me 🙂
This story is not at all anomalous. It’s my life. It always has been. Little did I know, but back in 1999 on that bus ride, I was (in a very unpolished and rudimentary way) coaching Bob. I was in conversation with him about his future vision.
People have always talked to me. And while I believe I have- in most conversations with others- been able to give them space to be, as well as my time and attention, I am also very aware that I get so much from being with others. I am curious about people. I am fascinated by people. I LOVE people. And now I have created a professional path that is all about BEING WITH people.
What’s more? I have always been able to see the greatness in others. With my training and my coaching of clients, I am now also able to stand for that greatness.
If you partner with me as your coach, we will work together to see your greatness. I will stand for you, your highest commitments and your vision for your best life. And if you empower our relationship and engage in the work of coaching, I have zero doubt that you will generate amazing results in your life.
How do you show up in the world for the people who know and love you the most? What gets in the way of you being that person no matter what the circumstances happen to be in any given moment?
